Outsiders Inn's Walk a Mile in Our Shoes event initially started as an empathy building event to assist in shifting attitudes towards a more compassionate understanding of varying perspectives that everyone finds challenging. Current situations such as a drastic increase in the amount of folks experiencing homelessness, the starting of a new services location (Navigation Center) and the interruption of hot meal services (Share & Memorial Lutheran) and targeted law enforcement practices has spurred an unprecedented affect on the neighborhoods surrounding the Navigation Center. Conversations around this topic are being had and this event is part of these efforts to communicate about the right to healthy community and dignity for everyone.
Walk a Mile in Our Shoes will be a community event to bring together different populations. We will have speakers representing sectors of our diverse communities. We will hear from folks that live, work and do business in the neighborhood, advocates, supporters, providers and formerly and current folks that are without homes, bathrooms or shelter. Get a chance to learn about local grassroots organizations and outreach efforts like Free Hot Soup (Vancouver)
, the Recovery Resource Center
and Clark County Recovery Cafe
, Pathways to Living Good
and Immanuel Lutheran's Severe Weather Shelter
. We will then walk a simple 1.5 mile route together with empathy and in unity with signs supporting positive community solutions, and then return to hear more music and camaraderie.
This will be a fundraiser to support the severe weather shelter and other work and resources needed for this upcoming winter season.
