RAP YAKIMA 53627 Sep 18

We have just got through an amazing Summit with over 60 attendees from 10 counties across Washington, including Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Spokane, Yakima, Pierce, Kitsap, Lewis, Clark and King!

RAP leaders from across the state learned about the 2019 Washington Low Income Housing Alliance lead agenda that they helped shape, brainstormed about other issues not on that agenda RAP might advocate on, learned some new skills and worked together in regional groups about how to move forward on the local level in the coming year!

There are a whole lot of opportunities to get involved in RAP going forward (more details on each below).

Opportunities will also include online trainings, statewide calls, upcoming events planned by RAP and partners (including a Tenants Union statewide gathering 10/20-21) and a candidate forum hosted by RAP, WLIHA and other groups working on poverty issues on 10/20). RAP leaders have also been in the news – see below for more details!

1)  There are going to be a number of opportunities to get involved on a state level and continue to shape the direction of RAP. We will be continuing online trainings. Here is the info to join:

The call in number is 866-792-9154 and the code is 741-789-6549.  We will be having regular calls every two weeks from here on out so people can continue to share their efforts with the broader group! We hope that you are able to join! More reminders will be coming.

3)  Washington Low Income Housing Alliance lead policy agenda items have been approved by the board. There were a number of “listening sessions” throughout the state attended by RAP leaders, an online RAP listening session and hundreds of online surveys filled out. The four policies include a significant increase in affordable housing funds, “Just Cause” eviction and increased funding for HEN/ABD. A document is attached to this email.

4)  RAP in the news: RAP leaders Mindy Woods, Kristina Sawyckyj and Jennifer Delia led a discussion in Snohomish County on September 27 along with the RAP partner the YWCA separating fact from fiction. Here is the link: https://myedmondsnews.com/2018/09/this-is-a-we-problem-homelessness-forum-separates-facts-from-fiction/

Mindy also authored an op-ed on the day the Source of Income Discrimination (SOID) bill went into effect: https://www.heraldnet.com/opinion/commentary-new-law-will-help-reliable-tenants-find-homes/

5)  The Tenants Union will be hosting a Renter Power Leadership Assembly on October 21 and 22 in Seatac. You can register by going to the link pasted below. Please note that they hope to have people registered by tomorrow (10/3) and to confirm with folks by 10/5. Here is the link:  http://bit.ly/RenterPowerApply

6)  RAP and WLIHA will be teaming up with Statewide Poverty Action, Food Lifeline and Northwest Harvest to host a candidate forum centered on poverty issues in the WA 47th Legislative District and 8th Congressional District on Kent at the Kent Commons Community Center from 11:30-1:30. Four candidates have already confirmed and both Congressional candidates are trying to find a way to fit this in their schedule! You can register at http://bit.ly/47thForum

As you can see – there is a lot going on! Hope to talk to many of you soon. Sincerely,

The RAP Team
